A UK promoter has purchased an island from the government of Croatia.  The island is slated to be called Obonjan and hopes to become a destination for international travelers for music, art and culture, geared towards the EDM crowd.

“We’ve been working on this project for three years which has given us time to carefully refine our ideas,” Sound Channel’s Dan Blackledge told Music Week. “Our vision for the island of Obonjan is to regenerate the island and turn it into a truly unique concept, combining art and music, wellness, sustainable living, amazing food and drink and fun and creative accommodation, all on an idyllic island paradise.” Project promoter Kristijan Gržetić added: “Croatia till now is recognized as a destination for families, and this project will put it up there with world trends, as an urban and modern destination.”

The project includes Sound Channel, the local government and various foreign partners.  The project which has been under negotiation for the past two years is slated to open in summer of 2016 and is expected to draw 120,000 overnight guests in the first season.   Obonjan will be the first island destination in the region and will have specialized infrastructure designed to create and provide modern tourism experiences.
