COLDPLAY SHOWS ITS LOVE FOR INDIA AT THE SUPER BOWL PERFORMANCE

British rock band Coldplay’s latest music video ‘Hymn for the Weekend’ might have triggered massive debate in India, over the video’s portrayal of stereotypical images of India with Hindu holy men, peacocks and colorful festivals. The four-minute video is a beautiful work of cinematography, yet it is untethered from meanings of religious and social significance the video contains.

For all the criticism faced by the group; when the rock band performed at the Super Bowl halftime show on the 07 Feb, 2016, it was hard not to notice the band’s fascination with India.

A week prior to the Super Bowl 2016, the Guardian had noted that at the Super Bowl halftime show, Coldplay should give their song a different visual cue, rather than trying to make the Super Bowl into a Bollywood extravaganza.

As it so happens, Coldplay did not quite follow that piece of advice. While Coldplay featuring Beyonce did not perform to their new collaboration, “Hymn for the Weekend”, the Super Bowl stage was decorated with marigold flowers and colourful garlands during Coldplay’s performance. They even wrote the band’s name in the Devanagari script on their amplifiers and drum-set.

While some loved the India theme, others didn’t quite appreciate it.

However, Coldplay’s love for India is very real. They provided subtle hints to them visiting India very soon on their twitter handle
