Coldplay gets Cheerful with New Single

ColdplayColdplay has released the new, EDM-inspired single off of their upcoming album A Head Full of Dreams.

“Adventures of a Lifetime” is groovy, psychedelic and soulful. The chorus is bubbling with synthesized vocals and an upbeat bounce. The electronic influences are not what you’d initially expect from Coldplay, but keep in mind they had Avicii collaborate on 2014s Ghost Stories. What really stands out is the tone. It’s a bright, joyful detraction from their usual somber ballads.

When they first started talking about the album, Chris Martin got hordes of “Clocks” fanpeople wringing their hands by implying that this album could be their last. BBC wrote:

“Speaking to the BBC last year, Martin suggested the new record could be Coldplay’s swansong.
“It’s our seventh thing, and the way we look at it, it’s like the last Harry Potter book or something like that,” he told Zane Lowe.
“Not to say that there might not be another thing one day, but this is the completion of something.
“I have to think of it as the final thing we’re doing. Otherwise we wouldn’t put everything into it.”

There’s no way to tell if this hold true now, or even if it had then. It could have been a comment to garner attention to their album, yet one can listen and wonder if this track doesn’t give the sense of a cheerful “goodbye”. As if it’s saying, “it’s been a good run, let’s leave on a happy note”. Even the single’s lyrics, “We are diamonds taking shape” could be a reference to their seemingly impossible growth.
